CRAU: I'd like to have him remember vague pieces of his time at Ryslig, but nothing concrete. Only enough to give him a sense of “being transported somewhere and transforming into a creature” deja vu.

PERSONALITY: Austria began his life as a carefree, even adventurous child. Comic strips surrounding his childhood exclusively portray him in the mountains and fields, and it's noted in a Q&A comic that he used to be in great physical shape as a child, and used to go for long periods of exploring. He had a very gentle personality, and was bullied by Hungary. Even though he was created for fighting, he met defeat after defeat. He was best friends with Switzerland, who would patch him up after his losses. Switzerland also criticized him for being too careless and dependent on him, as well as scolding him for poor manners and not being militarized enough. Eventually, Austria and Switzerland had a falling-out, and perhaps not so coincidentally, Austria's entire image completely changed – Switzerland notes centuries later, after reminiscing alone on their childhood, that he hasn't seen Austria laugh in years.

As a teenager (or the physical equivalent), Austria began to wear glasses (that he didn't need – he only wears them because he feels he looks too simple without them) and styling his hair to look wavy. In contrast to his past portrayal as a mountain-loving flower child, he's portrayed in more courtly settings, wearing the clothing of a nobleman rather than a traveler, frequently pictured in a palace or manor setting. Italy, who would have previously been his peer in physical age, came under his control and thus moved into his house. At this time, Austria was physically older than Italy (despite being younger in reality) and was essentially his guardian, but his treatment of him was that of an older sibling who wasn't ready to be put in charge. He was needlessly bossy, but the times they truly enjoyed together were times when music was involved, hearkening back to his gentler childhood, and suggesting Austria overcompensates to put on a “distinguished” front. Even when threatened with war, Austria suggests they not go to battle, because he empathizes with his court that doesn't want to abandon upcoming concerts. (He's an extremely talented musician, a reference to Austria's and especially Vienna's rich musical history as a haven for composers and performers to find success; he is shown in canon playing piano and violin, and there's quite a bit of official art of him holding a conductor's baton.) Though he is seen several times expressing disagreement with his leaders, he does not take enough of a stand. In a strip summarizing the revolts in Vienna in 1848, he is seen marching the streets with common citizens – a surprising contrast to his usual aristocratic portrayal. However, every suggestion for how to solve the conflict (especially setting Hofburg on fire) is met with distaste, and he considers it inelegant. His aversion to violence rang true in his old Habsburg motto: “let others wage war; you, happy Austria, marry.” He would much rather solve problems by forming strategic alliances through marriage (either himself or his royalty) than by fighting. Unfortunately, this prevented him from ever becoming strong on his own, and he relied on others – especially Hungary, whom he later married for survival – to fight his battles for him. He became involved in so many political messes that when his empire finally fell, he fell harder than he would have if he'd had more of a spine.

Over the years leading to modern day, he's kept his outward image of sophistication, but lacks the temper and bossiness that he had centuries earlier. This could be in part due to the fact that he was sworn to neutrality in 1955 along with his royalty being made to officially surrender all royal titles (despite not having ruled the country since 1918) as a condition for the ending of Allied occupation. He seems to have settled into this role very well, though he still casually (potentially facetiously) suggests marriage as a solution to problems. In comparison to earlier years, when he told Spain he would “not tolerate bigamy,” he seems to have somewhat abandoned his traditional ideals: on Valentine's Day, when he was living with Germany, he sent sweets to Hungary (then his ex-wife), yet still voluntarily took his pants off when Germany wanted to experiment with him – all after which he went to spend the afternoon with Hungary anyway. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ He's still very self-conscious about his softer side and looking disheveled; he's excessively humiliated when Germany sees him accidentally drop a coffee pot while walking around in his underwear, and he's also furious when France takes photographs of him brushing his teeth, picking flowers, drooling in his sleep, and playing with a bird. His pristine image is important to him, but as a character note states: “he looks like a straitlaced four-eyes, but he's actually surprisingly loose.” He leaves his underwear all over the house (Prussia once found a pair in the bookcase...?), doesn't hang up or fold his shirts, and although the finished product is polished delicate and delicious when he bakes desserts, he makes a mess of the kitchen when he does it. He's rather spoiled, and Hungary, despite now being divorced from him, truthfully enables this by coming in to clean up after him without his knowledge, causing him to think “the room cleaned itself.” Tying into his obsession with appearances, he also lives on a strict budget in private, but with the money that's saved, he shows off – in later years he took Switzerland and Liechtenstein to a fancy lunch, but Prussia ruined his cover by saying it's all an act, and that he lives like a pauper at home, often serving leftovers for breakfast to save money. Austria also hates to see others being wasteful – he once pulled Germany's underwear out of the trash and lectured him for throwing it out instead of patching it, and proceeded to patch it himself. Still, his outward persona is one of luxury – Austria prefers to wear his fur on the outside.

CRAU: In 2014 and 2015, Austria was at Ryslig. For the months he was there, he experienced the beginnings of transformation into a vampire. Characters with whom he had close contact from this time include Vietnam, England, America, Poland, Lithuania, China, Prussia, Sealand, Iceland, Naomi Kimishima, Princess Anna, Kieren Walker, Shinji Ikari, Miles Edgeworth, AM, Killua Zoldyck, Marian Hawke, and Kaoru Hitachiin. Austria had resumed his normal life on earth as if nothing had been out of the ordinary, and dismissed it as a vivid dream. Over the years, the few details that he retained became even more blurry; by now, he only remembers bits and pieces: a memory of the sensation of having lifeless skin, unexplained mental images of his nation peers half-transformed into mythical creatures, and a few other faces that he can't put a name to, but that cross his mind occasionally.

POWERS/ABILITIES: He can't die unless his government collapses and culture disappears. He's basically immortal and can regenerate/heal when wounded. He's a trained musician and probably could pick up any instrument and play it, having had over 1000 years of experience as new ones were invented. He also is very good at baking, and makes elaborate desserts. He is particularly skilled at sending mixed signals.
